BRG believes in the Fair Use of copyrighted material
for the advancement of education. It, therefore, allows for the
fair use of its published material, without permissions, if the
borrowed material consists of 300 words or less. For more than 300
words, the rate is $.25 per word (not including the indefinite articles
"a" or "an"), if permission is granted. For
example, to borrow 500 words, the permission rate would be $50.00.
Keep in mind, however, that permission is not just
purchased. It is granted according to usage, as well. Therefore,
the potential borrower should include, with their permission request
form, a description of how the material will be used in their publication.
BRG will evaluate the request and issue or deny permission accordingly.
If permission is granted, the borrower will receive a bill for the
amount due. The publisher or author rerserves the right to refuse
permission if the borrowed material is used in such a way that the
original meaning is misrepresented or in some way distorted, regardless
of any financial considerations.
When the borrowed material is used in relation to
the classroom environment, and not reproduced for profit, then permission
need not be obtained.
For images and illustrations, the permission rate
is not fixed, and must be determined by the publisher, on a demand
basis. The more complex the illustration, the less chance there
is of obtaining permission, except for classroom usage.
